Twenty-one year old Shelby Lee Meyer, a college volleyball player died on Saturday. She had died after falling off a ladder from an apartment building that was next to Columbia College, which she attended. At 2 A.M Shelby was trying to climb onto the roof when she fell off all of a sudden. She was later transported to a hospital immediately where she died at due to the major injuries that she had suffered. Investigators were interviewed and one of them said, “There is no evidence of foul play… However, the investigation is ongoing.” Columbia College is still healing from another loss that just happened a week before Shelby's death. In one of the statements Dr. Scott Dalrymple says, “It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that we have lost another member of the Columbia College Community.” Both girls died of a tragic death and are being missed by many. Their losses made a huge impact on everyone there at Columbia College. Nadria Wright was the name of the other student, who was also a freshman and she was fatally shot off campus. Shelby was from Missouri and was just transferred from Mineral Area Community College. She was currently working on her volleyball career. Dalrymple also says, “We want to extend our sincerest condolences to Shelby's family, friends, and teammates.” The schools president said that the college is mourning her death.

Meyers played in all of the Cougars 12 volleyball games and led the team in digs. On Monday the team shared a tribute on Instagram. The post says, “The one with the brightest smile, loudest giggle and best dance moves. We love you and we miss you. Selfishly we wish you were here with us, but you have made it to your forever home and knowing that we have so much peace. Thank you to those who are praying and have mentioned how much of a light Shelby was to you. She sure was one to us. Please continue to lift up the Meyer family and our team in prayer. You are so loved, our sparkplug.”

 Who is the Real GOAT?

Many people may debate who is the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time) in the game of basketball. I asked many different people about this discussion and it always comes between Michael Jordan and LeBron James. People may say that Jordan is better because his perfect finals record and other people may say that LeBron is better because all his stats and accomplishments. LeBron is still in the NBA while Jordan has been retired. Is it a Generational type of thing? Or is it based on facts? Students from Atrisco Heritage Academy had various different opinions about this.

Many people said that Jordan is the better basketball player. A student from AHA named Malachi said that “Jordan is better because he’s an all around better player and because he has more championships than LeBron.” Many people agreed with this statement. There was another student that said that “Michael Jordan is better because LeBron has played more seasons so he has more time to get the stats that he has.” Another student by the name of Matthew, said that “Jordan is better because he is just an all around better player than lebron.” Although these are good statements and people agree, LeBron has some good points too.

Out of the students that were asked at AHA, there are more people who agree that LeBron is the GOAT over Jordan. Several students said that he is better because he is the best all around player in the world. A student from Albuquerque Highschool by the name of Tony said that “Lebron is better because statistically wise he beats Jordan in every major category and he came back 3-1 in a seven game series to win over the Warriors and they won the most games in one season out of anyone else in the NBA. He also led his team and the other team in every stat on his own, Jordan never did that.” There where a lot of people that agreed to the statement and even added to it by saying “He's more explosive” or because “He's bigger, Faster and stronger than Jordan.”

Does all this matter? Or is it a generational type of thing? I also asked adults that may have watched Jordan play. I asked teachers, coaches and family. Out of all them it was almost the same thing though. People had opinions and some of them weren’t saying Jordan. Coach Ortea said that “Lebron is better because he is more skilled than Jordan and because all the things that he has accomplished.” There was also a woman that said that “Lebron is better because all the things he does off the court such as sending thousands of kids to college and building his own school. Another coach from AHA name coach Parra agreed with other statements saying that Jordan is the better player. He said “Jordan is better because he was perfect in the finals and he was just a killer. Since there was arguments with another generation, I don't think that it was a generational thing because even the past generation there are still many people who are saying LeBron James is better.

Stephen Curry Broken Hand Injury Affects the

Warriors

By Anisa Gallegos

This season has been really tough for the Golden State Warriors. During the 2019 Finals Klay Thompson, unfortunately, tore his ACL in his left knee, which was a tough loss the Warriors. Now, unfortunately, they lost Stephen Curry from a broken left hand while playing the Phoenix Suns this season. Steve Kerr, Golden State head coach is having a meeting with all the coaching staff to prepare for this season without another injured player. I interviewed Marissa, a freshman at AHA she had this to say about Curry injury, “Yes I think it is going to be a significant problem because those are like the star players and the MVP of the team and it is going to be very hard for Golden state to succeed. It is going to be hard for the team because they are used to the main players but all the main players are hurt. It is going to be different for the others because they are used to Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry helping them out.”  I interviewed another Freshman Shanice, and she had this to say about Golden State “ I feel that the Warriors can still manage but without the main point guard I feel that they are going to fall back especially considering they lost Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. They were definitely a powerful role in the Golden State's defense and offense. They were an unstoppable trio and it is sad that they all had to get hurt.” What both Shanice and Marissa said was very important. Although I really liked what Shanice said, no matter what happens or how many important players they lose they can still manage. A lot of young kids look up to these three players and I bet some kids and adults are kind of hurt that they are not going to see the trio or the splash brothers play this season. According to Forbes.com, it states that “ The Warriors are currently saying that it will take Stephen Curry three months minimum to get back to playing on the court,’’ I’m no Warriors fan but seeing Stephen Curry hurt and Klay Thompson to me, it seems like The Golden State Warriors won’t be back on their A-game till next season. I wish the Golden State Warriors the best of luck this season and the rest of the NBA teams.

Cam Newton to Miss Rest of Season

By: Kaylah Chavez

At the Panthers third preseason game Cam Newton sprained his left foot and continued to play while pretending it didn’t bother him. The weeks he played with his sprain he didn’t do well in the game. He then waited a month and a half hoping for his foot to get better. Now he is very unlikely to play for the rest of the season. On Tuesday the Panthers placed him on the injured reserve list. This means he is able to rehabilitate at his own pace but it could also end his tenure in Carolina. Being on the list means Cam cannot practice for six weeks and miss eight games which is what all the Panthers have left. “For the past seven weeks, Cam has diligently followed a program of rest and rehab and still is experiencing pain in his foot,” says General manager Marty Hurney. Cam Newton has already seen 2 specialists who both agreed he needs to rest and heal. The Panthers coach Ron Rivera refuses to answer questions about Cam’s availability, he even stopped a news conference after the repetitive questions from journalists. Newton says, “If I were to go out there and play four quarters of football in the state that I’m in right now with my foot, it would be a No. 1 out there but it won’t be Cam Newton, what everybody’s accustomed to seeing, and I refuse for that to happen, because I’ve been doing that for two games. And I said, that’s not acceptable. It’s hard for me to watch film, it’s hard for me to go about my everyday life knowing that I’m being held back by an ailment that all I have to do is just do right by.”

Most people aren’t fans of Cam Newton and don’t care much that he isn’t playing. Nathan Lucero a Junior from AHA says he doesn’t care but it also, “Isn’t fair to Cam Newton because that's what he loves to do which is playing football.” Sebastian M and Carlos R, freshman from AHA, both said, “The team would do better without him anyway.” Even though Cam Newton isn’t liked by most he still is not giving up and is waiting to get better so he could play better next season.
