Fall Spirit Assembly! Who Should’ve Won The Spirit Stick?

By: Sharada Moss

On September, 23rd 2019, Atrisco Heritage Academy held the fall spirit assembly! Everyone shows tons of spirit for the school and we are all proud to be Jaguars! Our amazing performers The Jaguar Gold Dancers, The Varsity Cheerleaders, Sean Ritchel (Rapper and English 9 Teacher), The Band, Katrina Jolly (National Anthem Singer) and Colour Guard all did so amazing and a lot of people loved the Jaguar Gold Dance choreography. We also had student council perform musical chairs. Student Council also had the varsity sports teams be announced with all of the members along with junior varsity. The crowd(s) were wild and full of spirit!

I asked a couple of students of which class they thought was the loudest. Chris Aragon, Freshman, stated “I think juniors were really loud!” Chelsea Lopez also stated “Juniors because they showed a ton of spirit!” Elizabeth Grajeda stated “Totally seniors, we were so loud but we had competition with the juniors they were loud too!” Brandon Silva says “seniors obviously.” It seems like a ton of people said Juniors and Seniors! Freshman wore blue, Sophomores green, Juniors black and Seniors got special shirts! Each grade had to yell and scream as loud as possible and show their spirit. Freshman didn’t have anything special sadly,  Sophomores had balloons and a banner and some streamer, Juniors were very loud, had balloons and a colorful and sparkly banner, Seniors stood up and shouted loud and threw tons of white streamer all around the gym!

The amazing performers were tons of people’s favorites. Many said the Jaguar Gold Dancers were better than the Cheerleaders and they’ve had tons of “feuds”. Everyone performed flawlessly and the Band did so good and were on point. Tons of people loved the flags performing with the band and they did amazing and almost perfectly in sync! Everyone performed amazing and principal, Mrs. Cisneros was proud of how much spirit we showed! We are Atrisco and we are proud to be Jaguars!

School lunch:Yuck or yum?

For many years, APS has made a lunch menu that varies from many different things. There are nutritious items are served everyday for breakfast and lunch, which is a really good thing for kids who sometimes don't have time to eat breakfast at home. Over 150 food service professionals serve 18,000 customers daily at 34 schools and even satellite centers. They try to serve  balanced meals because they have the focus of increasing the attendance of students, better their grades and concentrate better to perform at higher standards. The staff and students at Atrisco Heritage academy high school had their own opinions about this lunch which varied a lot from positive opinions to some negative opinions.

Most of the staff members had some interesting points to make, mainly being positive. Laura Alvarez, one of our main cafeteria lunch ladies stated, “ It’s something good for the students because they come out of class hungry and there’s something warm and ready for them to eat. I personally as a cook, make the food as if my own kids were to eat it.” This response is amazing to hear because it shows that the people in charge of feeding the students care for what is going into their bodies and they make sure it’s safe. One of the school nurses, Patrick Parker also stated, “ I haven’t eaten it, but it looks descent, I mean it’s a lot better than what I had growing up.” this shows how it is a privilege for us to have free lunch that adults didn’t even have the chance of having or that they even enjoyed.

There were also some negative insights about the lunch. For example, Marino Sandoval, one of the janitors said “ It’s good, but it’s sad that they give everything for free and the kids waste it, they also play with the food like babies.” Many may have experienced seeing this and it's a very sad truth that most don't like to see or it even angers them. A senior, Jose Rivas had this to say ,” It’s not that good, I mean it’s the same thing every day.” and other students such as sophomore Arleen Miramontes just straight up said “ it’s disgusting and not even healthy.” Many other students agreed with both of these statements which aren’t necessarily so positive but it gives others an idea of what it could be like.

Whether the students and staff think this lunch is good or bad it will continue to be the lunch that APS will serve. Overall the opinions of the food varied very much but most thought they could do better. What we eat isn’t up to the student really, it’s mainly the government. There will continue to be grown opinions on this topic so we will never really know the true answer to what the lunch is like.
